One question I get a lot is: “Which business is your passion?” Here’s the truth:
When I started concocting this crazy scheme, CrossFit was a means to an end. The goal was to open a brewery, and I saw opening a box as a creative way to make that happen for significantly less money up front. At the time, I would have told you my passion was brewing, but that I enjoyed CrossFit and fitness a lot.
A funny thing happened along the way: very quickly after opening ABV, I realized how much passion I have for coaching. One of the random memories I have of those first few months is from a beautiful Saturday morning in the early Fall of 2013. We’d already completed the Saturday morning Hero WOD and everyone had gone home. This was in the tiny, original space, where I could sit on a bench by the front door, sun shining through the window and breeze blowing through the open door, and watch cars come around the curve towards the end of the street.
I remember sitting there and thinking “This is it. This is what I was put on the face of the Earth to do. I love this shit.”
I also had no clue how much I didn’t know. About coaching, about brewing, about business, about life. I had a lot of learning and growing ahead of me in that moment, as I still do in this one.
And the more I learned, the more I began to understand that although I truly enjoy being a small business owner, and as much as I love brewing and beer, if I had to pick the one thing that I’m most energetic about, that I would do for the rest of my life, it would absolutely be coaching CrossFit.
Brewing is fun. Coaching is a passion.
But I’ve also learned that I have my limitations. There are only so many hours in the day, and attempting to breath life into two businesses is both exhausting and all consuming. For all my passion, my unfiltered emotions are not always bright and cheery. My blunt, confrontational style has burned more than one bridge and driven more than one athlete from our pack.
I certainly have my faults as a man and as a business owner. Every decision I’ve made, right or wrong, has been with one goal in mind: How can we continue to grow this wonderful ABV community? How can we have the greatest overall impact?
I have come to the conclusion that in order to pursue this goal and stay true to our mission, that we need help.
Not hired help. It isn’t that we need more coaches, although some days we do.
But someone to pick us up and carry us to the next level, to continue to stoke the fire, to breath passion into every day and every class. In order to grow ABV to new heights, and to continue to expand our reach and impact on the local community, we need someone who shares both the vision for our future and responsibility for making it happen.
It is with tremendous pride that I would like to formally announce that Theresa (and Eric) and Alex (and Hannes) have become part owners of CrossFit ABV. We have each been extraordinarily fortunate that each of the others were coincidentally at the points in our lives that this move made sense. We are all excited about the new ideas, energy, and passion being infused into our tribe. This is how we can continue to improve the overall fitness and health within our greater community.
What does this mean for you, our athletes?
Never fear- neither Krista nor myself are going away. We will still be at the box every day, and we will still be intimately involved with coaching and day to day operations. But Alex and Theresa’s involvement allows us to expand our programs, introduce new classes and seminars, as well as allowing us to become more directly engaged with community feedback. In short, this is an opportunity for us to vastly improve the quality of everything we do- from coaching, to nutrition, to facility maintenance, to community outreach. We’re raising our standards in order to raise your results, performance, and happiness.
Krista and I are relieved, elated, and incredibly excited about having Theresa and Alex on as partners. I never dreamed we would get to where we are today. And, unbelievably, the future is brighter than ever for our ABV community.
